Hello Hubsters! I did not lose my remote in a bowl of queso dip, and neither did the 21.1 million viewers who tuned into the show last night! It was a very successful night for Stephen, and the LSSC staff. The show was filled with funny moments, and many special guest appearances. I hope you enjoy your Special Super Bowl Late Show Guide!

Stephen Kicks Off the Live Late Show Post-Game Supershow LXXXVIII

The show started off with the toss of a football, which despite Stephen’s lack of athletic skills, he managed to catch. Since the show was live Stephen could do anything! Well, as long as the CBS lawyers approved that is. So, that first gesture with the football was totally fine, don’t worry CBS!

First up was the awesome surprise guests! Turns out that one day of high school football paid off, as Stephen tossed the ball around to a few special guests that evening. Firstly, there was a toss to the man in the camo, which happened to be Lt. Col. Christopher Landers & U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division. They got to watch the Super Bowl, and enjoy their interesting 7 layer dip. Hint hint, the main ingredient is dust. The second surprise guest was out of this world…literally, it was Scott Kelly! He joined in from space, and proved that even in zero gravity, a spiral throw could be done. There was a slight technical difficulty as the ball got lost in space for a bit, but not to fear, Chewbacca was able to catch it, and send it back down to Stephen, along with a lock of hair. The next guest was President Barack Obama, who joined in from the White House. The segment with the President was of course pre taped, although Stephen had a hard time believing it, until Mr. President proved him wrong.

Stephen’s past self then appeared in the video with the President! The President knew who won the game of course, as he let us in on a little government secret.

Colbert: So, let me get this straight, you don’t even know who won the game sir?
President Obama: I didn’t say that, of course I do, it was the Denver Broncos.
Colbert: What? If it’s a pre tape, How could you possibly know that?
President Obama: Stephen I am the President, and it turns out all the Super Bowl winners for the next 50 years are written on the back of The Constitution. That’s the plot of “National Treasure 3”.
Colbert: Sir, there is no “National Treasure 3”.
President Obama: Ha! That’s what you think, there will be. The script is on the back of The Declaration of Independence.

The President then tossed the ball back, but was a little rusty with his aim, and accidentally tossed it to First Lady Michelle Obama. She was joined by a group of kids doing their touch down dances. The First Lady caught the ball, and quickly exclaimed that there is No football throwing in the White House! Oops, looks like Stephen better watch it!

Stephen then discussed a little bit about what happened in last night’s game. Including Von Miller’s huge strip sacks on Cam Newton. Yes, the phrase “huge strip sack” was approved by CBS. Stephen congratulated the Denver Broncos on their win, and gave a shout out to those citizens of Colorado celebrating on cloud nine.

Interview — Tina Fey & Margot Robbie

Next up were the lovely and talented Tina Fey and Margot Robbie. They talked about sports, Spice Girls (Stephen announced he would be Ginger Spice), Margot Robbie’s tattoo skills (or lack thereof), and their new movie “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.”

In the midst of their interview was a live satellite feed from San Fransisco with Jim Nantz and MVP winner Von Miller. They discussed the Super Bowl, more specifically the “strip sacks” Von did on Cam Newton. Von had nothing but nice things to say about his opponent Cam Newton. The interview ended with Nantz and Miller doing a “dab”.

Will Ferrell & “Exotic” Animals

Will Ferrell was then on the show. He entered to a jazz rendition of “Hotline Bling”. Will was dressed rather strangely, and even armed. Will noticed a lack of an animal expert for “The Late Show”, and decided to fill that gap, by offering his animal expertise. Stephen tried to interview Will about the new movie Zoolander 2, but Will was very focused on the task at hand, educating us all on the “ duck bodied platypus” named Cilantro.

McCringleberry Gets Some Help With His Excessive Celebrations (ft. Key & Peele)

Next up was a touch down dance sketch done with Key, Peele, and Stephen. Or, as they are known in the video McCringleberry and Kimble Mathias. We got to see Stephen sport a football uniform, and do some touch down dances.

Interview — Megyn Kelly

Last but not least there was the Megyn Kelly interview. Stephen and Megyn of course talked about Donald Trump, and what she has planned for the March 3rd debate.

Last night’s show was filled with tons of Super Bowl fun! Over all a great night for Stephen and the LSSC staff! 21.1 million viewers, and possibly new fans of the show! Hope you all enjoyed this special Super Bowl guide, thanks for reading!

We can’t do a live chat, because it tends to crash the site, but feel free to treat this thread like an open, live thread. Let us know what you think of the live show in the comments.

This is potentially a really big night in Stephen’s career so let’s try to support him as hard as we can! Enjoy watching the game tonight! Go Panthers!

  • Gina

    President Obama!

  • Erika Bade

I think as a regular show it was very good. The Obama pre-taped bit was very cute, especially since Stephen appeared in it (I really liked the simple throw and catch they did during the throw to commercial). AND it promoted Mrs. Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative. Will Ferrell was his usual self on all late night talk shows, very funny, doing some sort of bit, and wearing something ridiculous. The victory dance bit with Key and Peele was really hilarious and it fulfilled my wish to see Stephen in a Jersey, with the sexy tight pants to go with it!

Here’s the thing though, there were parts of it that I wished were saved for a regular weekly episode. Margot Robbie was delightful and had good stories but it didn’t fit the specialness of the day. As was Megyn Kelly, I liked the interview as a whole but it was really out of place. I wanted to see Tina Fey alone, so she could be more personal with Stephen and maybe do something funny. She was wasted as a shared interview with Robbie, especially for a big live Super Bowl episode. At least that’s my opinion. Obviously they were having tech trouble with the Von Miller interview, so I can’t fault them for that, it was nice to see Paul Dinello!

All in all, like I said there were very good things and there were other things that would have been better on a different day. It just lacked maybe a bit of Oomph in some places. I know Stephen wanted to do as close to a regular show as possible to show newcomers what it’s all about.

I pretty much enjoyed most of the show, but I have to say the one segment that was disappointing to me was the Will Ferrell appearance. It definitely looked to me that the whole act with the animals, and refusing to discuss his movie, wasn’t planned with Stephen, and while Stephen was doing his best to roll with it, I disliked Ferrell throwing the show out of whack on such a huge occasion. I guess he thinks he’s being funny when he does these things but I really wish he had saved it for a regular, non-live show.
That said, it was great to see Tina Fey and Margot Robbie, though I agree a longer segment with Tina would have been more fun. Still, they all seemed to be enjoying themselves. I have to admit not seeing the Key and Peele football takeoffs before, but I did enjoy the special one they taped for tonight along with Stephen.
I also thought they pulled off the football themed opening really well given some of it had to be written during the game. I thought the best line of the night was comparing the Denver “wall” of defense to something Trump would want Mexico to pay for. Of course Stephen told it better than I just did 🙂
The “guests” tossing the football with Stephen worked really well, especially with the Obamas. They are such good actors!

  • DeeCee

Starting off with the positives…I LOVED the opening with the toss. Fun, energetic, and football-centric. Perfect.

Then there was the rest of the show. Don’t get me wrong, as a “show” it was fine. But I don’t think that fine was the goal. The show was lacking in joy, fun, carrying on the Super Bowl theme, connections with guests etc. I don’t think it showed Stephen at his best.

    Here it goes…
-Not knowing when commercials were etc. didn’t come off great. This stuff didn’t happen in the run-through live show. We can live with it, but Stephen is a pro and someone should have been able to signal off camera as to what he needed to do (ex. go to commercial or interview)
-Tina Fey/Margot Robbie — The interview was fine but they were pretty much there to push their movie and it was little more than a typical celebrity interview. Not discussing Second City was a missed opportunity.
-I could live with the awkward cut-in for the Vonn Miller interview given the show was live except that the interview was not terribly interesting.
-Will Ferrell - I didn’t think this bit was funny at all and on a regular night I would have gone to bed. And how did Stephen not hold the animals? Not interacting with the animals relegated Stephen to being an observer on his own show on a night he was supposed to shine.
-Key and Peele — Another long bit that fell a bit flat. The scene would have made more sense if the Panthers had scored a ton of TDs in the game and were celebrating/preening after each score. But given the defensive minded game (which was expected) with little in the way of excessive celebrating, I just didn’t think the piece worked especially well.
-Megyn Kelly - Interesting, but perhaps better left for a regular show. Certainly not a fun, celebratory interview.

So I’m disappointed to say that IMO this show was a miss in terms of re-introducing Stephen to late night audiences. I don’t think any regular watcher of Fallon or Kimmel would switch to LSSC tonight based on last night’s show..

On the other hand, did anyone stay up to see James Corden? He absolutely slayed it. It was a Super Bowl-centric show that was fun, smart, and full of energy from start to finish. Really a fantastic show.

And good luck to Sam Bee tonight.

    • Gina

Hi DeeCee! I get what you are saying, and I just went and checked out some of Corden online (I am home sick 🙁 I think Stephen really wanted to put on a “normal” show, hand out free samples to viewers exiting the super bowl coverage. Anytime he does anything big like at the top of the show, it definitely showcases his talents as a performer. Unlike Corden and Fallon, however, I don’t see him going the route of variety-style host. He really wants to talk to guests, and I think interviews are going to be his thing.

Ratings were good last night for both Stephen and Corden, so it was a successful evening, any way you slice it.

      • DeeCee

I get what you are saying too. If that was his intent, I just wish one or more of the interviews really shined.

    • tamara

i was most surprised there weren’t musical guests. the end felt incomplete and rushed without them. i loved parts of it and other parts (interview w/ football guy, key &peele football) i didn’t, but i was still really glad he did the live show.

      • Gina

If you watched old episodes of Dave, he would go without music guests frequently, and the last interview would always end abruptly, due to time constraints. They just run out of time! Especially when it’s live.

        • tamara

well, there weren’t any musicians advertised, but i was hoping for surprise guests. mainly because i find sports boring. but i’m still glad he did the show live and hopefully fewer of my friends will be all “what show is colbert on?” now when i talk about him. 🙂

I remember the Tree Surgeon sketch, but not the name of the character! *bows to your fan supremacy*

  • I thought the live show was phenomenal! Stephen tossing the football to various people in the beginning was awesome. I loved seeing President Obama and The First Lady. The Key and Peele sketch rocked, Tina Fey was lovely, and the Will Ferrell cracked me up! Bravo to Stephen and crew for the obvious hard work put into this live episode.

  • eli

How is Will Ferrell coming out as a Jack Hannah knock-off supposed to introduce a new audience to the show? This is just reminding people that Dave is no longer there.

  • K.V. Lady

    The guinea pig!

  • nigella125

Margot Robbie and Tina Fey can go to hell. After they both laughed at Margot’s comment about New Mexicans, those bitches can drop dead, F..k them both! Nothing like rich bitches making fun of people.
