Episode GuideEPISODE NUMBER: Season 1, Episode 102 (Tuesday, March 1, 2016)
GUESTS: Chrissy Teigen | Mike Birbiglia | Adam Savage
SPECIAL GUEST(s): Peter Grosz | The Cast of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’
STAFF CAMEO(s): Jen Spyra
SEGMENTS: Monologue - Fiddler on Our Roof | The Road to the White House: It’s Super Tuesday! Did Hillary Have a Terrorist Cat? | Chrissy Teigen | Mike Birbiglia | Adam Savage
SUIT REPORT: Blue Suit | White Shirt | Gray & Black Striped Tie

During Stephen’s monologue he was interrupted by a couple (played by Peter Grosz and Jen Spyra) and their young son, Jonah, who came to see “Fiddler on the Roof”, which is playing next door. They got in the wrong line and accidentally ended up in the Ed Sullivan Theater. That’s Broadway, baby! Stephen likes to accommodate his audience and with the help of the cast of “Fiddler on the Roof” they delivered a wonderful performance of “Matchmaker” and “Tradition.” L’chaim!

Stephen receives a kiss during “Matchmaker.”

Stephen in post-kiss bliss.

Over at the desk Stephen celebrates Super Tuesday. As they taped the show 13 states were holding their presidential primaries. There has been some shocking news about Hillary Clinton! In her book there is photo of her holding her cat in 1959. The cat’s name? Isis!

  • Cats have a lot in common with ISIS. They’re both ruthless killers who poop in the sand.

Super Tuesday is important for the Republicans, too. In the last debate things got heated between Marco Rubio and Donald Trump, who traded insults and over-talked one another.

  • It was like Ultimate Fighting, but without the satisfaction of seeing any of them get killed in the face.

CNN’s closed caption for the debate!

The establishment Republicans are counting on Marco Rubio to take Trump down, but Rubio is behind in all of the polls including his home state of Florida. Rubio usually doesn’t attack other candidates, but he was dropping the hammer on Trump, sinking to his level. Here is a sampling of Rubio’s insults to Trump:

Marco Rubio: “He’s flying around on Hair Force One.” “Donald Trump likes to sue people. He should sue whoever did that to his face.” “He’s taller than me. He’s like 6’2. Which is why I don’t understand why his hands are the size of of someone who’s 5’2. And you know what they say about a man with small hands.”

Stephen puts on a pair of fake big hands and the crowd is filled with laughter! Now, in the cold light of day we have learned the results from Super Tuesday. Trump won for the Republicans (how can this be happening?) and Clinton won for the Democrats.

Chrissy Teigan shares an interview with Stephen and then shows him a cooking demonstration from her new book “Cravings.” They made Vietnamese summer rolls. They talked about Teigan’s husband, John Legend, who Stephen is very fond of. They discussed her pregnancy. (She is due in April.) Stephen asked if they had a name picked out. Teigan said she “asked Barack” about the name and Stephen threw is hands up and jokingly and walked away at the name drop. Teigan wouldn’t say the baby’s name, but she whispered it to Stephen and he loved it.

Mike Birbiglia was guest number two. I’m a fan of his from “Orange is the New Black.” They discussed things that I never thought would be discussed on a talk show, but it made for some very funny moments, such as Catsachusetts, the importance of never falling asleep while acclimating a cat, parasitic mice, and mice that refuse to scurry.

Stephen did an experiment with MythBusters host, Adam Savage. We’ve all heard the myth that if you drop a penny off of the Empire State Building it could kill someone. Savage figured out the terminal velocity of a penny and figured out that it was not lethal. To prove it, his co-host Jamie shot Savage in the ass with a penny. Savage asked Stephen to shot him in the ass with a penny and Stephen said he would be honored. Savage dropped trou and Stephen shot him in the butt with a penny! The myth was busted!

Mp3’s of Stephen singing Matchmaker and Tradition with the cast of “Fiddler on the Roof.”
It was kind of hilarious watching Stephen struggle with that fake beard.

This was a beautiful episode. I loved that the top of the show included a Jewish-Ukranian wedding at the turn of the 20th century (aka Fiddler on the Roof.) Such a great musical. Also nice to see former TCR writer Peter Grosz! I saw him perform at the Second City 50-year reunion in 2009 (as he is alum, Stephen of course was also there) and he is a solid performer. He plays the guitar very well, as I recall, they should guest him on the band. :)

Chrissy Teigen has not always gotten the love from the internet, but she was great with Stephen. (The mom in me wants to tell her to slow down! Ah, the bravado of first pregnancies: “I feel fine!”) It’s clear they knew each before Late Show and were totally comfortable together, and it was funny watching Stephen trying to make spring rolls. They are good for you!

No Christina Hendricks (boo), but hopefully as they are former “Company” cast mates she will reschedule. I saw her in Company of course (these were my more active going-to-Stephen-appearances days) and she is so gorgeous.

Mike B. is awesome though! I have always liked him as a comic. His interview was a bit meandering, but that’s just him. You definitely will learn a thing or two about “parasitic mice.” Is that really a thing?

Pete Grosz! I was lucky enough to see him at the UCB theater the last time I was in New York. He was really very funny, and afterward as he was leaving, I really wanted to say something to him that made him know I was a TCR fan so I shouted out to him “I miss the Time Traveling Brandy Thief!” Not my coolest moment to be sure, but he did comment back “He may be back again someday” I have fond memories of this every time I see him in a Sonic commercial 😉

Keep showing off that perfect voice for musical theater Stephen! It was a delightful start to the show! The interviews were great, he seemed really comfortable with Chrissy Teigen, and had a blast with Birbiglia. One person thought Stephen was being difficult to him, but I think he was just trying to showcase Mike more by bringing out his stories. Stephen’s comments on acclimating a cat were hilarious.

I think you did the right thing at UCB, Erika. :)

Loved the Fiddler performance!!! More of that please. Also, loved Adam Savage. I hate that Mythbusters is ending. Why can’t they treat it like these late night shows? Just keep it going with new hosts…

  • K.V. Lady

I loved the Fiddler on the Roof opening! So cute and funny. I also loved the part between commercials when the cast of Fiddler danced back to their theater singing “Mazel Tov!” I also enjoyed Mike Birbiglia’s Real Mousewives of Catsachusetts. You could tell he really wanted to tell the story despite Stephen’s attempts to change the subject, and I’m glad he managed to get it out. Silly, yet worth it. It must be the best feeling in the world to have Stephen Colbert laugh at your jokes!

  • Katt

Can ‘Stephen Colbert and Post Kiss Bliss’ please be the name of Stephen’s new band!!

And now that ‘Mythbusters’ is almost over, can Adam Savage become a part of the show.

    • Vansen

I agree that Adam Savage should be enlisted as the show’s Scientific-Method Enforcer.

  • David Dudovitz

This episode was really hilarious at the taping! Stephen’s glasses fell off during the Fiddler dancing segment and were trampled, leading to him walking blindly back to his desk and saying “I think my glasses are fucked”. Later, Teigen claimed to have a nip slip, and Stephen gave her the giant fake hands to cover herself

    • Thank you for the taping info, David! Sounds like you got to witness some funny moments!
