The version of the show’s theme from the new opening by the Spike Jonze: Humanism (A Short Film By Spike Jonze).
The new intro was surprisingly heartwarming.

    • Gina

      Thanks! Agreed!

    • tamara

      dang, yessssss. you rock!

  • Debbie

Loved the intro, I thought it was great. I hope that they do create a new ‘big director’ version every four years. Time will fly before we all know it.

I thought the show was very funny, although nothing *really* beat the opening.

  • Gina

Wow. I found Spike Jonze being on the show tremendously validating. I really like his work, and the way he captures people. To have him depict Stephen like that was so cool. It wasn’t clear to me if Jonze was trying to say that Stephen was lost without the show, or even with “finding” the show show business is still disillusioning. #existentialquestions

But also in the interview, how Jonze spoke about the Late Show being “full of heart,” and how much he loved Stephen’s piece on Maurice Sendak, you got the impression that not only is he an it-getter but maybe a big fan (like we are.) That was a pleasant surprise.

It looks like the audience is going to keep chanting, and I have an opinion on this. I went to the last test taping with Sharilyn, and noticed that Paul Mercurio was really pushing the audience to chant. I thought it was a wrong move, and said so to Sharilyn. It’s not that I have a problem with chanting, I think it’s a very nice gesture, but to make it “compulsory” seemed over-the-top. The chanting started in a very organic way on the old show, and was meant to be a way for Stephen’s fans-followers/viewers to show their support for his edgy comedy, in my view. I think the way that the audience relates to Stephen should be the audience’s decision, not prompted or shaped by the production staff, although they may have good intentions. Plus, when you tell someone not to do something, it makes them want to do it more! I would just say nothing, and let the audience do their thing.

    • Erika Bade

I couldn’t agree with you more! Let the audience do their thing!

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a Spike Jonze movie, and now I really want to! He’s so sweet! He reminds me of Stephen in a way, the more intuitive and introverted version of Stephen. They seem to have a good rapport going too, I hope he comes back a lot!

      • Vansen

I agree with Gina and Erika. Let the audience’s response evolve organically.

The interview with Spike Jonze was lovely and thoughtful, and I agree with his comments about “heart”. If someone is motivated by curiosity, empathy and heart, it shows through in their actions.

    • Roseha

I loved Spike Jonze’ new sad and lovely opening as well, and the band’s adaptation of the theme was also beautiful. I didn’t necessarily see it as being about Stephen in particular but perhaps about feeling lost and alone in the city. I was glad he made such a great little film and had Stephen play the lead. Along with Grover of course!
Fun show all around. I thought I saw Riley during the Puppy Oscars?

      • Vansen

I like that Dexter received a Lifetime Achievement Award. Very sweet.

        • Gina

Awwww! I didn’t notice that *tears*

  • I really loved the opening! Spike Jonze did an amazing job, just like he does with all of his projects. His interview was fantastic and you could see the mutual admiration between Spike and Stephen.

The puppy Oscars were very cute and it’s great that all of the puppies are available for adoption.

  • Katt

I love the idea that muppets just casually sit around the streets of New York reading newspapers.

  • K.V. Lady

I just wanted to give Stephen a hug in that opening.
