Cuteness overload with Mavis Staples! She’s pretty much the coolest ever.

Is Meredith Scardino back on the show? She was holding Horsie there at the beginning. Hmm. That would be terrific! This would also prove that no one ever leaves working for Stephen for long. He is the Hotel California of TV, but ya know, not in that frightening way.

A great quote: “I think Trump is just being humble. He’s got a lot in common with Lincoln. I am sure if he is elected, half of the country would want to secede.”

“He is the Hotel California of TV, but ya know, not in that frightening way.” Brilliantly hilarious and true, Gina!

I was really anticipating a “Hungry for Power Games” when I heard Jeb Bush dropped out. Jeb! That might have been my favorite one! I loved “The Road to the White House.” So many brilliant quotes and it is always awesome to watch Stephen dry-heave! I was so surprised to see Meredith Scardino. She is fabulous and I’m so glad she’s back with Team Stephen! Mavis Staples was an absolute joy as usual. Ms. Staples is so strong and vivacious. I’m really glad that Stephen interviewed her AND she performed. What a gorgeous song.

    • Gina

Stephen is the best dry-heaver in the business! Is that a good thing? It’s funny, for sure, but you wonder if anyone would believe him now if he were actually were (God forbid, crosses self) to feel ill. “Sir, are you ok? Sir?”

eagerly awaiting a Taping Report from someone ..who possibly saw the Dreyfuss bit recorded??
Because me and a friend were at Feb22 recording and only saw Mavis (best grandma stories ever!) and Affleck. And yet another great LotR related question from audience randomly tossed out halfway thru the recording

I found the Casey Affleck interview a bit uncomfortable/awkward but enjoyed the rest of the show. Mavis Staples was adorable as always.
PS Guests for the rest of the week have been posted.

The Casey Affleck interview was so painful to watch. Stephen really needs to stop commenting on guests appearances, especially as a way to start off an interview. He of all people has no right to comment on such matters, seeing as he doesn’t have a show suit that fits him.

    • DeeCee

I would temper that statement a bit and say that it is unwise for Stephen to start off an interview with a sarcastic/snide comment unless it is with someone he already knows well (and he knows they will either take the comment and make a joke or ignore it if they dont’ want to pursue that line). If someone takes a comment like he made with Casey Affleck the wrong way and the whole interview starts badly and can veer off course/get uncomfortable very quickly as this did. This interview was kind of a train wreck IMO. Simply put, an offhand comment like Stephen made about Casey Affleck’s appearance when he first walked in was not a risk worth taking. And BTW, Casey Affleck had on a button down shirt and blazer and probably thought he looked just fine for a talk show.

      • Gina

I think you make a great point. I will say that Stephen always used to harass his male guests on the Report who didn’t wear a tie. He is so fastidious about his appearance, it’s easy to see how he would like to rib someone who was, more, say, casual. I am sure he meant it to be good natured, but Affleck was a little off-put. Some guests sail through interviews with him, laughing along the whole way; some have a tougher time, but I appreciate the fact that Stephen stays true to himself and doesn’t conduct himself superficially.
Also, I think he looks amazing in his suits! Those TCR suits were baggy enough to occupy their own zip code, I have gone back and done some comparisons.

I’ve never understood the need for a host to comment on a guests appearance. It can go either way, either they love the outfit the guest thanks them and they move on with the interview, or this happens, and things get very awkward very quickly. The guests really aren’t out there long enough to waste time talking about wardrobe choices. That’s not why people tune in to the show for. Leave it to Tim Gunn.

      • Gina

I think what you wear says a lot about you; it’s fair game.

  • Gina

This is such a sweet picture. I think of her as his honorary Aunt, but either way, she’s a good person to have in his life. The fact that she was one of the last people he referenced on The Colbert Report finale shows how much she means to him.

    • DeeCee

Agree, probably more like a dear aunt. Don’t think anything can come close to the relationship he had with his mother.

  • SD

Does anyone think there’s a possibiity that the Casey Affleck interview was a set up? Stephen has said many times that he loves doing uncomfortable things and thinks it’s great when the performing situation is uneasy. Maybe he spoke ahead of time to Casey Affleck and they agreed to goad each other and act ticked off because they thought it would be funny or something people would talk about.

    • DeeCee

Guess anything is possible but I think that it would shown at some point if they were doing a planned bit — in this case there was never a hint of laughing about it or anything.

      • SD

I just keep thinking how Casey Affleck directed that fake Joaquin Phoenix documentary during the time that Joaquin had that bizarre Letterman appearance. Casey must also love awkwardness. Laughing or tipping their hand that it was set up would’ve ruined it. I don’t know…just a thought.

        • DeeCee

It certainly could be….if so they fooled me!!
