SUIT REPORT: Grey Suit | White Shirt | Teal Tie

During the monologue Stephen discussed Hillary Clinton’s problem with getting the youth vote. Most millennials are Feeling the Bern. Clinton reached out to young people by advertising on AOL. I really like Secretary Clinton, but it is not 1998! I am hopeful that Clinton’s team comes up with a better strategy.

Stephen gave a very kind and funny tribute to Antonin Scalia, who passed away on February 13th. I did not agree with Justice Scalia on pretty much anything, but Stephen’s tribute is a good reminder to see people as human beings first. Justice Scalia did have a good sense of humor and really enjoyed Stephen’s now legendary speech at the White House Correspondents Dinner in 2006.

We had another round of The Furry Hat. My favorite proclamation of the evening: “The female version of a sausage fest is now officially a Georgia O’Keeffe retrospective.”

Craig Ferguson’s interview was a complete delight! He sucked us in to his Scottish vortex of charm. Stephen and Craig discussed Craig’s US citizenship and his new show on The History Channel, “Join or Die.” As a bit of a history nerd, I can’t wait to tune in.

Ashley Graham and Hailey Clauson joined Stephen for an interview and a photo shoot. Along with Ronda Rousey, these models will be on the cover of this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Addition. It is great to see that Sports Illustrated have included models of different shapes and sizes.

Cory Booker discussed his new book, “United”, which gives a positive and hopeful message for the future of the United States. Senator Booker talked about crossing party lines to get thing done in Washington DC. He even passed legislation with (gasp!) Ted Cruz. Stephen asked the Senator if Obama will nominate a new Justice to the Supreme Court now that Justice Scalia has passed away. Booker’s response was beautiful, but it did not answer Stephen’s question. Stephen - ever the man who wants a straight answer from politicians - called him out and asked the question again. Booker told him that to leave that seat vacant for over a year is unacceptable. As it states in the Constitution, the President has the right to appoint a new Supreme Court Justice without waiting until a new President is elected. (Take that, Republican naysayers!)

The show finished off with game of darts. It was World Darts Champion, Scott Waites vs. Stephen and Craig. It was really fun to watch and Mr. Waites came out the victor. No surprise there!

What a lovely tribute to Antonin Scalia. When I heard of Justice Scalia’s unexpected passing, I thought of how Stephen might react to it. I too remember him being one (of the few) “important” people at the 2006 WHCD who absolutely enjoyed Stephen’s performance. It seems that people who knew Scalia personally echoed similar sentiments, that he was able to separate himself from his role as the conservative lion of SCOTUS and be a personable guy across the ideological spectrum. You wouldn’t know it from this work, of course, he was soooo conservative, but it’s worth noting, as Stephen did.

Craig Ferguson was delightful! I love his energy, I used to really enjoy his interviews on his old show, because he just talks about whatever the heck he wants to talk about. I always found that refreshing.

I liked the models segment, actually, it was sweet, and when Stephen got up there and started posing it made it even more fun. Ashley Graham has a great sense of humor, I’m happy for her that she is so confident and sexy and all that good stuff. I always used to hate when they would have “plus size” (i.e. normal-sized) models and they would be in these dorky poses.

Cory Booker was talking up a storm, Stephen trying to hem him in on answering his question about a SCOTUS replacement was funny. Cory did shout out Stephen’s sister, Elizabeth Colbert Busch, so that was nice.

Also, I want a Late Show dart board!

It was kind of an odd episode, not bad at all, just strange. I thought it was weird that Stephen kept trying to reign in Craig Ferguson, for example. He was funny! Let him go Stephen! This is what you want, people that don’t just want to plug their project, and yet Stephen kept bringing it up instead of yes….and-ing him. He did a couple of times though, and those were the best moments. The Corey Booker interview was a bit awkward too, although I can’t fault Stephen for keeping him on track. He just didn’t seem to connect to his guests today. It might be because of the Grammy’s stuff he did, it could have distracted him, or tired him out a bit. All the physical stuff he did was great, I loved how into the darts game he was! It was just the conversations that needed work this time.

Now his Scalia tribute was really beautiful. I just knew he was going to bring up his time at the WHCD because I know it meant a lot to him that Scalia thought he was funny :)

Scalia tribute was nice, short and sweet.

Craig Ferguson, always the Scottish dreamboat that he is, didn’t disappoint, though I was VERY surprised at how much more loquacious he was than Stephen in this interview. He allowed Craig to light up the room, though his topics were bouncing all over the place. I never really knew that they actually didn’t seem to know one another that well at all. I guess that’s why we never go to see them interact, but this was very nice and refreshing. I caught his stand-up show in Richmond back in the fall and it was delightful. I was always a fan of his on Late Late Show, and I know Join or Die will be just as entertaining. I wish I had cable, though. Hoping some streaming options will be available. Their interview was a bit too short, IMO - but it was nice that he brought him back out for the dart segment. That was fun. The only thing missing was Craig’s beloved rattlesnake mug, which should have been on the desk. 😉

I was also surprised at how much I appreciated the model segment. Ashley exuded confidence and was gorgeous, so it was nice to see more attention drawn to the more natural average size woman. I am also in her size range, therefore it was very empowering for me as well.

I missed the Grammy’s so I didn’t catch his segment, but i’m sure i’ll see it later. In other news, i’m shocked he didn’t speak more on behalf of the latest crazy talk that’s come out of Kanye West’s mouth about getting financial assistance to accommodate his ideas and personal debt problems. I just knew he’d have some sentiments about that.

I did hear Stephen and Craig briefly discuss Kanye’s debt problems, that was when Craig said “How can he be in debt? He has a clothing line!” I really enjoyed the Craig interview, I never saw his show much, but I thought he and Stephen were really funny together, and Craig seemed to really enjoy being on the show. Bringing him back for the darts segment was a great idea, it would be fun to do that kind of thing more often with comedic guests.
I hope Stephen’s Grammy segment will be online! I have to admit I’m too lazy these days to watch or record awards shows, I always think everything will end up on Youtube anyway. But I haven’t found Stephen’s segment yet. Maybe later.

I am so jealous of those models…not so much because they’re hot, but because they got to flirt and pose sexy with Stephen!
