Paul and Stephen talk up weekend plans and share some Valentine’s Day messages in need of a revision or two.

It seems that Stephen is making good on his promise to include “sidekicks” on the show more frequently; this is most we have ever seen of Paul in a good long while. Paul is a really funny guy and seems generally available to pitch in with the comedy, so why not? We also saw Jason Baker, producer and Colbert Rocker Extraordinaire helping out with the wine-pairing and Foghat-wailing (that’s a tough combo, at least simultaneously.)

I guess Katie Holmes was a no-show, but Kelsey Grammar was a nice replacement. He acted as if he were pleasantly surprised to be there, and he didn’t have much to promote other than a Broadway show he’s almost completed. The Foghat bit with Fred Armisen worked well by taking advantage of Fred’s bounteous hipster-cred.

Stephen did an admirable job keeping his eyes north during the interview with Sarah McDaniel, another last minute guest addition. Sometimes I blame modern fashion for the skimpiness of dresses made popular today. Sarah seemed just as uncomfortable wearing that strapless dress as Stephen was trying to carry on something resembling a normal conversation. He did well, however, and as always is a true gentleman.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Hubsters!

It’s always a pleasure to see Paul! We got a glimpse of him during the post-Super Bowl game last Sunday, he tried his hardest to get Stephen onto the stage in Stephen’s “Ben Carson Entrance” on Monday, and now he appeared on this episode. It’s been a good week for Paul! More please!

I loved the Foghat wine tasting with Fred Armisen. It was so silly! I haven’t been able to get “Slow Ride” out of my head.

The interview with Sarah McDaniel was very awkward. Stephen was a true gentleman, but the whole thing was a bit cringe-worthy!

    • DeeCee

I can’t imagine what made Sarah McDaniel think that wearing that dress on national TV was remotely a good idea.
And yes this week has been fun with not only Paul but other staffers getting involved as well. I’m hoping that trend will continue.

I agree that was cringe-worthy. I like that Stephen didn’t just pretend not to notice, I mean how can you ignore how many times she had her hands at her chest? Bad dress decision.

  • K.V. Lady

I agree with Kirsten, I thought it was funny, particularly when Sarah said that the only thing people notice about her is her eyes, and Stephen said something like, “Right now I’m noticing another part of you!” And let’s face it, she’s a Playboy model so she’s obviously comfortable with showing off her body. Even though the models aren’t nude any more, I’m not so naive that I think they’ll be dressed like nuns. I’m just glad she didn’t have a Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction!
I also liked Stephen’s Valentine’s Day “gift” to Evie of mentioning her on his show! The dialogue between Stephen and Paul was funny, too.
But what happened to the Hungry For Power Games for Christie and Fiorina dropping out of the race?
