Poor Stephen. Dr. Phil told him he needed help, and the Duplass brothers suggested he didn’t know what he was doing. Stephen can’t win 😉 Michael Eric Dyson was nice and forthcoming, however, so that was refreshing.

I do love how delightfully pervy his mind is, given the top of the episode.

The musical performances this week has completely blown me away! First John Moreland and now Anderson Paak. Whoever is responsible for booking The Late Shows musical guests: I love you!

      • Gina

That’s Stephen’s booker, Emily Lazar. She has been pretty amazing with the musical acts. All new talent, it’s absolutely fabulous.

Sheryl Zelikson is the musical booker, not Emily Lazar.

          • Gina

            Ok, got it boss! 😉

            • Rita

The music is one of several aspects of the show that I treasure. Thank you for giving me her name :) Update: I love Sheryl Zelikson!

        And then Wilco tonight!

I figured Stephen and Dr. Phil were just messing with each other, but it did seem to me that the film-maker brothers were being borderline rude to Stephen, unless that was supposed to be a joke? Too bad, because their clip was kind of funny.
I also agree with Mr. Dyson’s observations that our President does not get the respect he should as president and there is definitely a racial element to some of it. It’s true he needs to remain calm and “Spock-like” as people have said, to counteract this.
Anderson Paak was great, and so excited to be on the show! I also loved his hug of Stephen, Paak seemed so thrilled at his first big audience. Great that the show introduces new artists like this.

I agree, I liked the clip that the brothers showed, it looked almost David Lynch-esque in tone, but they were kind of rude. I think they were trying to be ironic, but it just came across as unkind. I think if the guests are earnest it works better, when they are ironic it takes away Stephen’s control of the interview.

I haven’t been able to watch the whole episode yet but the interview with Michael Eric Dyson drove me crazy. I couldn’t figure out if Stephen was playing devil’s advocate, if he wanted to make his white viewers feel comfortable, or if he’s just that oblivious. Yes, America is racist, and yes there is a substantial element of racism in the way Obama has been treated. “Opposition to Barack Obama doesn’t mean that you’re a racist though.” “Rudeness isn’t racism.” “They were pretty mean to Bill Clinton too.” If he really believes those things were more important to get out than the point his guest was trying to make, I don’t know what to say. If he doesn’t, I wish he’d engaged him more intelligently. Not the first time I feel that way about an interview… I don’t like it when he pushes black guests to make us (him!) feel better about being white and to soften their message. I wish maybe he’d listen more and maybe, I don’t know, read about it.

    • Gina

I think he’s trying to play devil’s advocate. The very fact that he has him on as a guest (and Deray the BLM leader, Killer Mike, and so on) shows that he wants his/this view point to be given the national stage. Only Stephen would have an intellectual like Dyson on in Late Night!

      • K.V. Lady

Yeah, I think he was trying to play devil’s advocate, too. He did similar things when he interviewed Bernie Sanders and Bill Clinton.

        • Lou

I’m just not a fan of this interviewing style. Not being in character was supposed to give him the opportunity to interact with guests and be knowledgeable. Playing devil’s advocate keeps the discussion surface-level and contributes to the feeling that he’s not totally being himself. And I just don’t find this type of questions particularly illuminating. The interviews would be so much better if he could be more open about his own views. He’s having Bernie Sanders on again next week, and I just hope he asks questions that HE wants answered, for himself. He doesn’t need to dumb things down.

Hungry For Power Games will always be hilarious!!!!!!
