Monologue

Stephen started the show with a pep in his step as the audience did the ever so famous “Stephen!” chant, but Stephen was in fact a little troubled last night, as he told us of the terrible news…banana extinction. Yes, Stephen warned us that everyone’s favorite fruit to spell out in song, B-A-N-A-N-A-S, might become extinct. The Panama disease has started to spread from middle aged men in hats on vacation to the beloved banana. Banana extinction has happened before, and now we fear the end of the banana once again. Stephen expresses his worries of banana extinction, and I share the same worries as Stephen, especially the last one.

  • Without Bananas, no one will laugh at that knock-knock joke that ends with, orange you glad I didn’t say banana. Instead they’ll cry and say, no I wish you had said banana, because I miss them.
  • And, what are high school health teachers gonna put condoms on? Cucumbers? That’s just wrong.
  • And, someone, please tell me, for the love of god, when I cry “Come Mr. Tally Man”, What is Mr. Tally Man gonna Tally me now without me banana? I mean seriously, daylight come and me wan’ go home.

Friday Night Fights

We then got our first installment of the new segment “Friday Night Fights”, which is based off of polls Stephen posts on his Twitter page. Everyone is welcome to go vote on @StephenAtHome’s Twitter page. Last night’s segment Stephen “fought” with long time friend Paul Dinello on these polls:

Make sure to go on Twitter and cast your vote now! I mainly agreed with Mr. Paul Dinello on the polls, but I do agree that Stephen loves Paul a little more. Sorry Paul, but come on, Stephen picked you out of all his brothers to be his best man, and you picked your brother to be your best man? Although in Paul’s defense Stephen did officiate Paul’s wedding, and also Paul only had one brother. Could Stephen really only pick one out of all his brothers? Or was it easier to just pick his best friend? It’s a tough call, take the poll, and feel free to leave a comment down below about who you picked and why.

Interview — Scott Kelly

We then got an out of this world interview with Scott Kelly. The interview was full of laughs, funny captions, and zero gravity flips. We also got to hear that the C.O.L.B.E.R.T. Treadmill is still being used up in space! Here are a few captions I enjoyed from the interview:

Interview — Abby Wambach

We also got to see Stephen’s soccer skills, as he faced Abby Wambach in a little kick off game. Sorry Stephen, looks like you have to practice your soccer skills, cause Abby beat you on this one.

Interview — Maria Bamford

Lastly there was comedian Maria Bamford. She is the second comedian to do a stand up routine on the show, and she did a great performance, She then joined Stephen for a very funny interview.

Last night’s show was filled with many great moments. Let us know what your favorite part of the show was down below in the comment section!

Well, that’s it for this week’s guides Nation. Tune in next week for brand new guides! Thanks for reading!

I know that Stephen is a big fan of Maria Bamford’s (he named her as one of his favorite comedians at a taping I had been to a couple years ago), so I was so excited to see her on the show. I checked out some of her work and she overcame a lot of obstacles with mental illness to simply continue working, and it is nice too to see that she got married recently. I hope she makes it on the show many more times, maybe she can be an Amy Sedaris to Stephen’s Letterman.

Also liked Friday night fights! And we got to see Paul. Whenever Paul comes onstage and does bits with Stephen he always gets big laughs. Hopefully he can co-host Friday night fights. Can anyone imagine Paul wearing a suit and tie? I know he has at least a couple times.

And oh yeah, an interview from space! Stephen has such a great connection with NASA, it’s so amazing that his treadmill is still up there. Anyways, great ep guys! Hope you enjoyed it!

Why can’t Amy Sedaris be the Amy Sedaris to Stephen’s Letterman?

The Bammer! She’s lovely and a genius, and I’m so glad Stephen had the chance to fawn over her. Hope for many more appearances to come.

Friday Night Fights was great. I think this is the first sign that they’re seriously eyeing those double tapings on Thursday that Stephen referenced in the Stern interview. If they’re going to tape Friday’s show on Thursday, the content has to be evergreen. Stephen’s monologue can be done like that (Dave’s was a taller order), but most of the desk bits he’s been doing have been too topical to have on the shelf for 24 hours. This would be a great solution. And I’d love for Paul to be on all or most of them. (Incidentally, I voted for Paul in the poll, because he had Stephen OFFICIATE his wedding, dammit! That beats Best Man any day.)

Have you ever met or seen Maria’s stand up live?

I think I’m ok with Thursday double tapings IF we get more field pieces out of it! You could tell the league of kitchens piece was old because the trees were still leafy green.

I have! And I was able to photograph her as well, which was super fun. (And she almost saw ME live - a mutual friend was going to bring her to a show I was doing, but the timing didn’t work out. It’s just as well, I would’ve lost my mind if I’d seen her in the audience.)

I totally agree on the pretaped material. It feels like Stephen’s schedule prevents the digital team from making the best possible stuff, like the luxury brand piece and the bits that were produced over the summer. The piano lesson with Jon this week was a home run, and really made me crave the same type of material with Stephen included. (Of course, no guarantee that he wouldn’t fill his Friday with writing and production concerns anyway.)

The subtitles on the Space Station interview reminded me of The W0RD. I also love that Stephen brought up his C.O.L.B.E.R.T. treadmill.

I like the twitter Friday Night Fights idea, it’s funny and it involves the fans. It seems like the live audience is dying to get involved, witness the “Santa Santa” and “Warlock Warlock” chants, which both seemed totally spontaneous. Even though it appeared some of them weren’t familiar with Paul (which surprised me a little) it seems like a great way to get them involved outside of just watching the show.
    Enjoyable show all around.
