Episode GuideEPISODE NUMBER: Season 1, Episode 48 (Thursday, November 19, 2015)
GUESTS: Jane Fonda | Andrew Lloyd Webber
SEGMENTS: Monologue | No Country for Anyone Not Already Here | Jane Fonda | Andrew Lloyd Webber |Stephen Gets His Show Tune On with Andrew Lloyd Webber
SUIT REPORT: Grey Suit | White Shirt | Navy Tie

What did you think of last night’s show? I had a feeling this visit would be far tamer than the lap-cuddling of TCR interviews past. I have a theory that Jane’s admiration for Stephen began as she was actually a guest in the audience at the 2006 WHCD which catapulted Stephen to fame and glory. Her liberal-loving heart was won over, and she made a personal note to let him know as soon and as emphatically as possible. Mission accomplished.

Fonda strikes me as the kind of woman who is bold and adventurous. She really does look amazing for her age. I was dismayed to have read about incidences where people have spat on her at book signings, etc., because of her “Hanoi Jane” antics. The antipathy towards her amongst her detractors is very strong for someone who seems to simply want to live out loud. It’s nice to see she doesn’t care about any of that and is still shining bright.

I hope she keeps coming on The Late Show and wearing sexy outfits! Rock on, Jane.

It’s the Stephen-Colbert-being-seduced-by-Jane-Fonda Emoji.

I will be putting a nice guide for y’all, but let us know what you thought of this Thursday show in the comments.

Monologue

Stephen laments the lack of McConaughey and his own non-status in the current edition of People mag’s “Sexiest (Men) Alive.”

  • I’m a little disappointed to learn that the only place my name appears in the magazine is the address label, right there.
  • I’m not going to be sexy shamed anymore! I don’t the problem is me. I think it’s the people at People. Here’s my proof. Matthew McConaughey is nowhere on the list.
  • People ask me…what is the difference between me and the old character…both of us think that McConaughey is empirically, objectively sexy.
  • [McConaughey] is the gold standard [for sexy.] If it makes [David Beckham] happy to be on the cover, good for him. But McConaughey not on the list at all! It’s sexy malpractice.
  • I tried to be fair. I thought that maybe McConaughey has been sexy for so long, they retired his sexy jersey, and raised to the rafters of the Sexy Museum. But even if that’s true, that means he’s shirtless right now, and boom! He’s back on the list.
  • I’m calling on the people at People magazine to fully disclose the methodology to fully disclose for choosing your Sexiest Man Alive. Otherwise, readers may stop taking these lists seriously at all.
  • Donald Trump says that he has lost 15 lbs while on the campaign trail so far. Which is great news, because if he campaigns long enough, maybe he’ll disappear completely.

Here is the pic from Stephen’s turn as model of “Sexy Surprises” in People in 2006. The bic pen is uber present, as per the usual:

    Interview — Andrew Lloyd Webber

Stephen and later, Jon, join Lord Webber at the piano to review some his greatest hits. Stephen treats us to a little “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

I do love how Stephen joins the band at the end to say a final “good night” to the audience. It doesn’t always get captured on air, but in person it’s a very sweet gesture.

It’s disappointing that Colbert would have Webber on his show and not bring up Webber’s vote in the House of Lords to eliminate tax subsidies for the poor. He flew to England just to cast the vote because many of the lords thought the policy was to harsh and Webber was afraid it wouldn’t pass.

I knew Colbert would move to the right on his new show, but I didn’t know he would go this far.

Stephen asked a very open-ended question about ALW’s ability to vote in the House of Lords and ALW discussed in some depth that he felt his role was primarily to vote on issues related to the arts, that he voted to subsidize a violin program in under performing schools, the positive impact the program had on the school, and how important he feels it is for everyone to get a music education. The door was open for ALW to talk about whatever he wanted.

Other than that, I did like that Stephen had two longer two-part interviews. I sometimes feel that he needs to rush people in and out with those six or seven minute segments and to me the two longer interviews felt more relaxed, more interesting. I’d like to see more of the longer stretches with guests as I think it plays more to Stephen’s strengths. I enjoyed the piece at the piano with ALW as ALW seemed more comfortable tinkering the keyboard then sitting in the guest chair. I was expecting to see a scene from School of Rock, but this was better IMO!

And no teal tie, but Jon did have a teal suit…….

        • TCS

ALW wasn’t going to bring up that he oppresses poor people on his own.
Teaching a few people to pay the violin doesn’t make up for causing a million poor people to go hungry.

We learned tonight that both “Stephen Colbert” and Stephen Colbert believe that Matthew McConaughey should reign as the “Sexist Man Alive.” Alright, alright, alright.

I really liked the interview with Jane Fonda! She is lovely and so intelligent. Although she wasn’t as amorous as she was during their TCR interview, she was still a bit flirty! Her dress was gorgeous. I thought the emoji from their interview on TCR was so sweet.

It was amazing when Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stephen, and Jon all gathered around the piano and sang some of Webber’s show tunes. Stephen really belted out the song from “Jesus Christ Superstar” and he was fabulous.

I would like to add that I find it abhorrent that Webber voted to cut tax credits for low-income families. As an American, I did not come across the story much in the news, which could be the reason Stephen did not out right talk about it. But I have read about it and John Oliver did a piece about it on Last Week Tonight a few weeks ago. Quite low of Webber, to say the least.

I loved this episode. It was nice to see Stephen and Jane doing a normal interview. I’ve wondered for years what it would be like when Jane returned to the show. The only thing I wish Stephen had asked was why she did it back in 2007, but other than that, it was good.
The segment at the end felt like old school variety TV. Maybe Mike Douglas? It just had a very old fashioned vibe to it with Stephen and Jon just singing short parts of the songs.
