Story time: Tuesday nights I take a performance class that invites me to do embarrassing things on stage. Not easy. Went for post-class drinks with my classmates last night, and explained (at length, natch) that I’m trying to take inspiration from Stephen to push myself deeper into that discomfort. I get home late, turn on the tv, and the third sentence out of Stephen’s mouth is “I like feeling embarrassed.” Gave the universe a little side-eye for that one.

Even aside from that, I thought Carrie’s interview was the best part of the show. She was delightful and a great interviewee (“are you cool?” was so great), and it’s not the first time I wished the 3rd guest had gotten a longer segment.

I like that Carrie was not with Fred Armison. Every time I see them on talk shows they are together. Now don’t me wrong, I like Fred a lot, but it was the first time I heard more from her directly, and I liked what she said about finding an outlet to express yourself. Easier said than done. Kudos to you for taking that performance class!

      • Jennifer (aka ColbertsLassNC)

Agreed - I enjoyed her solo… but i’d love to see Fred on there too, by himself as well. In due time.

    • Jennifer (aka ColbertsLassNC)

I agree - and am a little bummed that her book tour has no southeast dates on it…

Guess what my son is going to be for Halloween? A red Power Ranger! :) I love that Stephen is doing stories interlaced with jokes in the monologue instead of regular stand-up. That part of the show is getting better and better. I liked every interview as well. I know some people want him to be tougher on Hillary and I do think it’s a bit obvious that she is his personal front runner but it doesn’t really bother me that much, even though I’m a Bernie gal. I still think it’s inspiring to see a woman be so close to becoming President.

The whole show was very enjoyable. Hopefully vegetarians don’t get too mad, it was a hilarious segment.

It’s the Red Power Ranger vibe! I love how delightfully random Jon Batiste’s thought patterns are. You never can predict what he is thinking over there. If I were Stephen I would just embrace and let his Jon-ness become part of the show. I love when they chat together.

    • Jennifer (aka ColbertsLassNC)

Jon’s take on the Power Ranger killed me… it was super funny and adorable. I think that most of what he does on stage is an act and he’s much more intuitive than that, but I love his relaxed la-di-da persona up there. He was such a gem when we met him after the taping on October 9th!

  • Jennifer (aka ColbertsLassNC)

Great show. Someone on Twitter had nicknamed Hillary as Chillary, but I couldn’t help but see the polar opposite as I watched this interview. She’s just like us… well, sort of? I guess we should have seen her binge-watch list coming though, typical. Haha.

Bourdain looks so much thinner than he did the times I had seen his show, but I liked their segment.

Honestly, I was itching to see the end of the show when Carrie came out, as I have this undying magnetism towards her super dry humor. They were great together, though i’m with Sharilyn wishing it had lasted longer. “Way to make it awkward…” from the job helped me know that it was going to be a superb interview.

In addition on Brownstein, I loved her words on improvisation. I saw the twinkle in Stephen’s eye for sure… 😉 You can always tell when he’s really into the interview when he does the “lean-in”. It was great and wonderful and all of those other super cute things.

    • Gina

Yes, the “lean-in”! And when he gets quiet and just listens. It’s cute.

      • Jennifer (aka ColbertsLassNC)

Usually he throws in a few mmhmm’s under his breath too, but sometimes he just makes the face and leans. It’s adorable. Something the old character would have never ever done!

I was laughing so hard at the bacon/vegetarian segment, even though I’m afraid to eat bacon since the WHO findings - and it’s the only red meat I like! (By the way I’ve been avoiding hot dogs almost completely ever since Ralph Nader listed their ingredients at an appearance at my college many years ago - no human DNA found then though!)
But Stephen’s take on the Smug Veggies was just so hilarious - right up to the bacon in the pipe smoking bit.

I should add that I was away traveling a lot recently so haven’t caught up on all the shows but I really love the way the show is gelling and coming together. In another month or so I can see Stephen and company making it even more their own.

          • Gina

Welcome back! Traveling really does mess up more important things like TV viewing, right? 😉 The whole meat thing is really misinterpreted, because you have to eat 50 g of the said offending meats to warrant the cancer risk. So I say, smoke away!

            • Roseha

Thanks for the welcome back Gina! Sometimes the problem is just having to get up early (and no Tivo/DVR available) but I recorded all the shows and am catching up - as it turned out the show was on vacation last week anyway. I am wondering if their break had anything to do with the baseball playoffs, if CBS felt the games would run long and they didn’t want to compete against them?

              • Gina

This question has been asked a few times around the internets. I think the baseball playoffs is a good guess. The break was planned and in the media even before the show premiered, and of course coincided with Jimmy Fallon’s show being off-air. There are 202 shows a year, so there will be 3 months of breaks that will parceled out throughout the year. I don’t know how the LSSC felt, but we here were relieved to get a little breather after all the craziness of the premiere and the feverish weeks of production that followed.

I really enjoyed the interview with Hillary Clinton. She seemed to have fun and answered Stephen’s political questions with ease. She is an extremely intelligent woman.

I am seeing lots of love for Carrie Brownstein in the comments. I must add to that love! She is fantastic. I love ‘Portlandia.’ It is amazing how many different characters she plays on that show. She is incredibly talented. Stephen seemed smitten with Carrie and rightfully so. It was such a great interview.

  • Gina

I also think it’s great that the band is using its status to highlight up-and-coming musicians during the commercial breaks. It’s hard to get the word out about your work, and LSSC is a surprisingly great (and large) live venue. That’s 400 people right there who might learn your name and hear you! And female voices definitely help diversify things a little.
