Stephen addresses the tumult of world events, the cuteness of Prince George, and brings on Amazon warrior Edan Lepucki. But first, a handsome pose.

I was glad to see that Edan Lepucki made it on. I am sure Stephen was waiting until the prescribed Colbert Bump had fully run its course.(But it’s still going!) To get to #3 on NYT surmounts pretty staggering odds for a first time novelist. However, Bill O’Reilly frequently tops the NYT bestseller lists, so maybe writing about “killing presidents” is the trick? Dunno. Also, kind of her to pay it forward by promoting another new author’s first effort Stefan Eirik Clark’s Sweetness #9.

It was good to see Stephen substantively address world events right now. It seems like summer and violence are synonymous in the Middle East, when you think about incursions in the not-too-distant past: i.e., scuffles in the Arab spring countries, Israel vs. Lebanon, etc. However, I can’t distinguish from the sinking feelings I feel when I see children in Gaza being killed and injured, and the unfettered violence that plagues the city streets of Chicago, especially in summer. Violence in one corner of the world is violence everywhere. And now, to add to the pile of troubling affairs, we have utter instability in eastern Ukraine. Unfortunately, as Stephen said, these kinds of issues can’t work themselves out over a productive weekend. These are not merely PR issues, these are deeply rooted tensions that will not easily diffuse.

Sorry for not “keeping it light.”

What did you think of the ep? Shout it out in the comments. We’ll have lots more to come!

Intro - 7/21/14

Tonight! I unleash my anger on Amazon. Except I chose free shipping, so I actually unleash it in 3-5 business days. Then, a doping scandal in the world of sports. The Kentucky Derby tested positive for horse. And my guest, Nancy Pelosi, has a new plan to save the middle class. Oh perfect! I think he watches my show. The world’s second richest man says we should have a 3-day work week. Now you know why he is only the second richest man. This is The Colbert Report.

World News Wrap-Up

  • Of course, I have to start tonight folks with a shocking international incident that drawn the attention of every nation….the story’s still unfolding, but preliminary reports indicate that Prince George is walking. It’s magical to see His Royal Cuteness take his historic first toddle. And, what a relief to know that members of the royal blood line still have the bone density to stand up.

  • Folks, this is great, and we’re all smiling, because everyone is happy. And I believe that concludes World News Wrap-Up. And there are not any big international stories, right Jim?
  • Right, yeah, ok. [The Ukranian air disaster] was Thursday, I was kind of hoping that an atrocity that could spiral into World War III could have worked itself out over the weekend.
  • There are many theories of where these Russian made missiles came from. One theory is they came from Russia.

“That’s right. These bastards have managed to make AIDS depressing.”

  • Ok, back to the sad mines. This is an obscene and violent situation, involving warring groups in lawless, foreign territories, and one tyrant bears the blame: Barack Obama.
  • [Calling Putin a jerk] wasn’t easy for me to do. I’ve long been one of Putin’s biggest fans. In 2008, I supported him for President of the United States. I defended him against Pussy Riot. Plus, all those famous shirtless hunting photos? Guess who took those.

“Plus, all those famous shirtless hunting photos? Guess who took those.”

Colbert Nation vs. Amazon - Edan Lepucki

First-time novelist Edan Lepucki celebrates her book’s success as a result of the storied “Colbert Bump.”

  • Obviously, no one was more pumped than Lepucki herself, who has said getting the Colbert Bump left her with a “mixture of elation and nausea.” Yeah, I gotta say, a lot of ladies say that.
  • Edan: Thank you Colbert Nation for buying my book and reading it. I’m so, so incredibly grateful to be on this show and to have my book talked about. I just really appreciate it. So thank you.

Post script: Edan posted some nice pics of her visit to The Colbert Report here.

Interview - Nancy Pelosi

House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi describes her initiative “Middle Class Jumpstart,” which targets helping women through an equal pay mandate and child care assistance.

Stephen: When will you start jumping on the middle class?
Pelosi: We’re jumping for the middle class.
Stephen: Are you going to raise taxes on guys like me who make millions of dollars a year? Are you going to raise taxes on me?
Pelosi: Let’s talk about this. What we have is to stop giving tax breaks to corporations that are shipping jobs overseas, instead give tax breaks to keep good paying jobs here.
Stephen: You know I’m a corporation. That’s attacking me. I’m a corporation, and this entire show is written in Malaysia.

Stephen: How will you get it done, though? Because nothing gets done in Washington. … What are you going to use? Do you have naked pictures of John Boehner doing something?
Pelosi: No, no.
Stephen: And if you do — is the tan uniform?

Stephen: Why would you ever want that job again? John Boehner is on the edge of a nervous breakdown all the time. He looks like he’s going to break into tears. Isn’t that a hard job?
Pelosi: I didn’t love being speaker, but I liked getting the job done for the American people

  1. Congratulations to Edan Lipnicki for the debut of California at #3 on The New York Times best sellers list. We did it, Nation! I loved that packing material fell on Stephen instead of balloons. Perfect!

I really enjoyed the interview with Nancy Pelosi. I liked the subjects she covered. Very important issues!

Tip of the Hat! Thumb up +3

  2. Just about one minute before Edan Lepucki walked out, I was thinking, I wonder when she’s going to be on the show? I’m psychic. ;-D
Also, I was thinking Stephen was going to say that “Sweetness #9″ was about him and his life partner.

Tip of the Hat! Thumb up +2

And that's the Word!
