I am really enjoying the cold openings. And I think this was one of the best monologues, too.

I do miss Humanism at the close of the show, but maybe they decided that having 3 “theme songs” for the show was too much (pre- monologue, opening credits, & show close) and went to just a jazzy tune.

I enjoy the cold openings, too! It was a great idea.

Deerhunter was cool. I will be “hunted” for saying this, but I got some Dave Matthews vibes from their style.

Seeing Bill-O insult Stephen would normally be infuriating, but when I think of all the accolades Stephen got from imitating him, I can’t hate too much. Those Emmys don’t award themselves.

Finally, a great quote: “And, as president, Trump is going to convince the rest of the world that you shouldn’t mess with America, because we’re crazy!! And there will be ample evidence of our insanity when we elect Donald Trump president.”

    • Awesome quote! And I got a DMB vibe from Deerhunter, too. Especially with the sound of the sax.

  • I loved the cold open with Liz and it was hilarious how Stephen floated around with the balloons during the theme song. It was so cool of Stephen to give a shout out to Larry Wilmore. I thought Larry’s speech was extremely funny even though the internet blew up over it. I was reminded of Stephen’s speech in ’06, which I wrote in my intro in this week’s BKAG. I’m glad Stephen addressed this saying how he was never invited back.

Stephen’s comparison of Trump to the Lethal Weapon movies was so right on! “This is the fifth presidential election I’ve covered and…I’m getting too old for this sh*t.” I also really liked Stephen’s piece on Cruz. I’m so damn happy that Stephen is still covering presidential elections, because we need him right now. As I right this, Indiana is reporting 83%, so Trump has won with over half of the Republican votes. How is this happening? Who are these idiots voting for this vile man?

The interview with O’Reilly was great. Some people are saying that Stephen wasn’t hard enough on Papa Bear, but I feel that just by Stephen letting O’Reilly be O’Reilly shows what a condescending moron he is. Stephen is a million times smarter than O’Reilly could ever hope to be. Plus, Stephen mocked him for 10 freakin’ years. Like Gina brilliantly put it, “Those Emmys don’t award themselves.”

I really liked the cold open too. It’s always great to see Liz Levin, and the balloons were a cute, whimsical touch.

So, Bill O’Reilly. I respect that Colbert is trying to bring on guests who have polarising opinions, but I have to say, I find it very difficult to watch guests who don’t know how to behave in a civil manner. LSSC has featured Megyn Kelly, John Kasich, Ted Cruz and even Donald Trump as guests, all of whom were reasonably polite and engaged during their interviews. O’Reilly is one of the only guests who has behaved in a consistently rude manner, repeatedly insulting, talking at and talking over Colbert. It seems clear that his intention was not to have a discussion with Colbert, but to deliver a lecture. I’m not sure how often I can watch that kind of exchange.

However, it’s interesting that O’Reilly wears his rudeness as a badge of honour; boasting that he’s rude to people face-to-face, whereas I’ve noticed Colbert takes the opposite approach. Some people have criticised Colbert for not being harder on Trump when he was on the show several months ago (and I do think he could have held him to greater account), but I did note that Trump was quite courteous to Colbert during the interview, so I can understand that Colbert responded in kind. It’s interesting, because Colbert might metaphorically eviscerate someone in his satirical pieces, but when he has them on the show, face-to-face, he often genuinely tries to have a respectful discussion. To me, that suggests that Colbert makes a distinction between the ideas that he disagrees with, and the person who holds those ideas. The former, he puts through the satirical wood-chipper; the latter, he tries to have a constructive dialogue with.

O’Reilly’s philosophy, on the other hand, suggests he makes little or no distinction between the idea and the person holding the idea. Neither is worth listening to. Neither has value. Neither deserves his courtesy or respect. And seeing how taken aback he is by Colbert’s intelligence, I wonder if O’Reilly has genuinely confused aspects of the character of Stephen Colbert with the real Stephen Colbert.

Bottom line: I don’t mind seeing polarising guests on LSSC. However, I do mind watching consistently rude guests talking over Colbert. They should only have O’Reilly back if he agrees to use some kind of chess clock so Colbert can get a word in.

Stephen is a good man to support his colleagues. Wilmore was not funny, but Stephen knows what it’s like to be crushed in the media for a performance at the WHCD. It’s just that Stephen’s performance was actually amazing. Wilmore’s was a dud. He’s a good man to try to support Wilmore, but Larry was just not anything close to what Stephen was in 2006. Obama should replace Larry on his show after next year. Obama was way funnier than Larry.
