History Professor, Dr. Peniel Joseph will be history after Stephen Colbert nails him like did he nailed Ambassador Andrew Young. So bring on the racism, democracy and civil rights just like the Supreme Court has!

Watch the show to see why Stephen Colbert is crying and what he and Peniel said about the Supreme Court Voting Rights Decision. And let’s explore what this braided cord is on his right wrist as well.

SCOTUS on 1965 Voting Rights Act

Surely, if the Voting Rights Act has worked so well over the years that we don’t need it any more and given that the British are not attacking the Colonies any more, can we strip the Second Amendment too?

Brazil’s Political Protests

Spending extravagantly on preparations for the World Cup does not sit well with Brazilians. Especially when the cost of this preparation is placed squarely in the laps of the bus riders with a bus fair hike. And you know how tender Brazilian laps are.

Stephen commiserates as he doesn’t think soccer is worth all of this attention as it is. “Come on! Use your hands already!!”

Welcome back, Esteban Colberto, it has been way too long!

Stephen asks Esteban what is going on in the vast continent of South America but Mr. Colberto reminds him that the cultures are not all the same. “It is like comparing apples to hairless, sex-crazed oranges.” They don’t even speak the same language, ask your dog!

Esteban thinks the trouble has something to do with putting a hat on the Statue of Jesus.

CHICAS!!!!

Brazil’s Political Protests - Larry Rohter

Stephen asks Larry Rohter’s book “Brazil on the rise” is about Obama’s South America. Mr. Rohter concedes that it is the presence of a middle class in Brazil that is feeding the riots with viable protesters!

George Zimmerman’s Murder Trial

Knock, knock, … whose there? … An Idiot … Zimmerman’s Lawyer Who? Check out Stephen’s review of the verdict that came down soon enough on July 15th 2013, the Zimmerman Verdict.

Interview - Peniel Joseph

Dr. Joseph is a professor of African-American Studies. Stephen explains how the striking down of the Voting Rights Act will be a boon for his study of racism, as there will be so much more of it.

Dr. Joseph explained “color-blind racism” which Stephen thinks is silly, kinda like the stripey socks. Besides, Stephen points out, it’s not oppression but the downtrodden’s fault if you are being ‘color-blind:’ standard, blame the victim rhetoric, duh!

Good night, Stephen. Good night, iPad.

  1. Every episode is a win with Esteban Colberto, who didn’t have any good Brazil analysis but looked good all the same with his buxum chicas. Stephen always gets that latin bravado thing down perfectly. And the little gyrations going on at the end of it were hilarious.

It seems like we have another bout of unrest going on in the world, with Brazil and Turkey having pretty bad rioting. Oh yeah, and Syria. It’s basically like a post Arab-spring global melee. Or something like that.

Peniel Joseph was a good guest for a sad day in civil rights. I think this is a topic that is particularly important to Stephen, hence his really getting fired up with Joseph. I hope we can get this issue resolved before states involved start really screwing around with voting laws. Gerrymandering, etc., is having a profound effect on the electoral process, as we have seen in the congressional races, and race-targeting voter suppression will affect federal elections, to be sure.

TIP OF THE HAT! Thumb up +7

  2. That scene from ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ reminded me of when Stephen did a spot-on impression of Gregory Peck on ‘The Dana Carvey Show.’

  3. So Elanor, how did you get that screencap to come out so crystal clear? Mine always look fuzzy.
I posted over on the Colbert Report facebook page that I want to be a chica. I can move like that. ;-)

  4. I had forgotten just how much I love Esteban Colberto. I hope we get to see a a lot more of him and his chicas during the FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympics. An entire week of shows hosted by Esteban would be so awesome!!

I was quite disappointed by the interview, I felt that ‘Stephen’ kept interrupting Peniel Joseph every time he tried to make a point. Sometimes he really needs to dial his character down a little, or turn a different dial, it isn’t fair on the guests.

TIP OF THE HAT! Thumb up +3
