WELCOME TO THE REPORT!
Hair Report: Gorgeous.
Seriously. Stephen’s hair looked pretty good last night.
This show was heavy on the coverage of gay marriage, the ongoing debate and what the Supreme Court will do about it. Stephen has been conversing with Emily Bazelon quite a lot recently. She was just on as the main guest a few weeks ago and just last week she and Stephen chatted on her show, the Gabfest.
Supreme Court Hearings on Gay Marriage
“I personally want to salute this guy for wearing the hot pink devil horns drag outfit. That is how you win the hearts and minds of average Americans. After all, it’s exactly what Martin Luther King wore at the March on Washington. I cannot believe he made it to the mountaintop in those heels.”
And now a scene that may or may not have really happened:
Graphics dept guy: Hi honey I’m home.
guy’s wife: What did you do today?
Graphics dept guy: We made Dr Martin Luther King dressed up in pink devil horns, a pink wig and pink fishnet sweater as he talks at the March on Washington.
guy’s wife: that’s nice dear.
A really adorable 83 year old gay woman was testifying about why gay marriage is so important. She referred to marriage as “magic” and said that straight people don’t understand why it’s so important.
“They’re tugging at your heartstrings, or as lesbians call it, scissoring.”
Ruth Ginsburg apparently didn’t know that DOMA differentiates between civil unions and straight marriage. She compared gay marriage under DOMA as being like “Skim Milk marriage”.
“I keep track of the sexual orientation of all my dairy products. 2%, that’s straight missionary. Half & Half, come on. And yogurt? I think we all know what that fruit is doing on the bottom.”
“Don’t call me a bigot just because I’m lactose intolerant.”
“Marriage is for procreation only. If you lose that requirement, it’ll confuse the issue and straight couples will forget why they’re having sex.”
Am I the only one who thinks that sperm is swimming towards a burnt cheese pizza?
John Roberts’ cousin Jean was on hand for the hearings and she thinks that he will see the humanity of gay marriage and make the right decision.
“That’s going to be an awkward Thanksgiving. (As Jean) John could you pass the mashed potatoes and the sweet potatoes or are those two things too similar to share a plate and offend your traditional Thanksgiving values, even though they taste great together and they’re perfect for one another. If anyone needs me, I’ll be in the car.”
Supreme Court Hearings on Gay Marriage-Emily Bazelon, pt. 1
“…the entire future of marriage in this country rests with Justice Anthony Kennedy, the man who declared in ‘Citizens United’ that corporations are people with constitutional rights. I hope he doesn’t do something rash, like declaring homosexuals people with constitutional rights.”
Emily seems to think that DOMA is goin’ down, er, will be struck down, I should say. Which is good news if you’re a supporter of gay rights.
Stephen: Have you found your gay partner yet? Because we’re all going to be forced to do it.
Emily: I’ll look.
Stephen: Get a good one….I’m going with Ryan Gosling.
Stephen: When did gay marriage become a constitutional right? When did we start accepting that? Give me the date that happened.
Emily: I think it’s recently, but I don’t think you can put an exact date on it…
Stephen: No, you can, okay? It was September 19, 2005, the premiere of “How I Met Your Mother” because Neil Patrick Harris plays a super straight horn dog and we buy it.
Supreme Court Hearings on Gay Marriage-Emily Bazelon, pt. 2
In the B block, Emily expressed that the arguments against gay marriage were surprisingly weak. She said that the government has never defined marriage as being for procreation only.
Emily: Does the government have a good reason to exclude this group of people? I did not hear any good reasons.
Stephen: Well there’s also the…:
As Emily said, “ick” is not a reason to exclude a group from rights everyone else has.
Robert Lustig
Dr. Lustig has called sugar evil and poison, but Stephen wonders if he could go further and call it “Hitler”.
Stephen: You call sugar a poison, right?
Dr. Lustig: In high doses.
Stephen: Why not use a more alarming term like ‘sugar is Hitler’?
He said that 33% of Americans have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Stephen: That just means we’re more elite as people. We’re turning ourselves in Foie Gras.
Dr. Lustig: Exactly.
Stephen: What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.(points to himself)
He talks about how sugar is in everything, as well as High Fructose Corn Syrup. HFCS is actually the same as sugar, it’s just that HFCS is cheaper and replaced sugar and is now in everything, including BBQ sauce, hot dog buns and ketchup.
He recommends eating the wrappers that food comes in for the fiber content.
Sign-Off:
Niicee montage, llama! I don’t know what all that beginning-of-show preening was about. Maybe Stephen was getting some compliments during the Q &A. It was good to see Emily Bazelon again, she was the perfect guest for all the discussion over the DOMA stuff going on in the highest court.
I also enjoyed the main guest. I will take to eating the wrappers on my processed foods from now on, as Dr. Lustig indicated that would be better.
My favorite line: “and yogurt? I think we all know what that fruit is doing on the bottom.”

Yes, that show-intro-preening was massive! Threw me into a giggle fest ’cause I thought folks would be chatting about it and by folks, I mean fangirls. Colbrow and hair and all in all handsomeness. Nice suit report too, Llama.
This implication that Federal benefits will turn on and off depending on location is, as Stephen so aptly puts, F*&ked up. Two grown ups maintaining a dual household and assets is good for society. Well, we’ll just have to see.

I can’t wait to see this weeks episodes!!!! Gay marriage, or I should say, LGBT rights issues in general… Is my nearest and dearest topic of interest. It’s been really hard following all of this Supreme Court stuff without Internet or tv…..just the good old fish wrap factory, and it’ll be nice to get caught up, and made to laugh in the process, with the help of Stephen….and Jon too.

@Erika: fish wrap factory. I like that, assuming you mean newspapers right?
I loved the line about Anthony Kennedy declaring homosexuals people like he did with corporations in Citizens United.

As I am now running through this post, I realize that Stephen ran the gamut of expressions in this episode.

As someone who has been very involved with the LGBT rights movement ( and in this case, gaining marriage equality in NY state), I LOVE that Stephen has been spending so much time on this very important issue. Stephen has been a wonderful advocate for LGBT rights with very inspiring segments on his show. And this week has been no different. He is just fantastic.
And yes, he does look VERY nice!

Liked that Stephen was channeling a lesbian; he was nicely indignant. As always, great conversation with Emily B. … I agree with Dr. Lustig that sugar is dangerous but it is tough when your evolutionary tendency is to go for the fast energy. *shakes fist* Why make fat and sugar taste so good! *shakes fist again* Made me think of that scene when Stephen dumped the sugar all over himself when there was a scare of a sugar shortage, LOL.

@Elanor: I will have to go back and rewatch the interview. I saw Dr. Lustig’s long talk on Youtube about the dangers of sugar. I want to cut back but if sugar is in everything how do you? I would like to know what the Doc’s solutions to this problem are.
Elanor, thumbs up on the dumping of the sugar from 2009. I wouldn’t mind seeing that again. Maybe next time Dr Lustig is on, Stephen could do it to taunt him.

Our family was blessed with a genetic problem which has resulted in our needing to avoid processed food which has required us to cook meals from scratch. We thought this was going to be a hassle but actually, it has turned out for the better. It is all about trade offs. Not always easy and we are not perfect but we are managing and I do think we are healthier for it. Eating out is limited too but then that has helped with the pocketbook. Weird how things work out sometimes.
