Gotta love the swoopy cam:

Obama spikes the bin Laden football:

Is it any wonder why Stephen and Jon are the most trusted newsmen in the country? Even though they continuously nail Fox News and Republicans to the wall, they will not hold back against Democrats. I’m sure many of our conservative friends who watch the show, loved the line about Obama not closing Gitmo.

I also loved that Stephen brought up Bush’s over-the-top football spike complete with Aircraft carrier and “Mission Accomplished” banner.

“I believe that was called the USS Humility”

Is there some place that every journalist newsperson goes to get copy and snazzy catchphrases? They obviously all watch each other because the “spiking the football” quote is certainly not the first time on the show, and on The Daily Show too, where a montage of clips using the same phrase, has been compiled. I just got back from shopping and while waiting in line at the register, I noticed a paper that had a big pic of Obama in a football uniform and it said, “Obama spikes football”. Can you take a guess at which paper it was? If you say it’s owned by Rupert Murdoch, that’s a pretty safe bet. It was the New York Post.

Paul Ryan vs. Thomas Reese:

Oh it was such a pleasure to see Paul Ryan get nailed to the wall, hung out to dry and whipped into shape and all by a bunch of fellow Catholics. I have been known to be a big non-fan of the Catholic church, but I give them huge props for doing the right thing in this case. I guess they have their moments.

I also can never get enough of their “Visual Approximations”:

Father Reese is one of two Catholic priests that I like. Well, the only two that I know of are Father Martin and Father Reese, so that means I like 100% of all Catholic priests that I know of. Also, 100% of all Catholic priests that I like are friends of the show. Who knew?

Carne Ross:

“My guest tonight proposes a new form of government. I hope it’s a puppy-ocracy. That would be adorable.” Certainly sounds adorable.

Carne Ross: admitted traitor. I keep thinking his name is meat. I have to admit, I watched this interview twice and I don’t remember it. Could be just my brain, but I certainly remember the interview on last night’s show.

“Leaderless revolution. That’s called chaos…have you ever been in a theatre
company? It takes five hours to decide where to go for dinner”

We can assume Stephen knows that from experience.

As a Catholic I really liked the Paul Ryan Budget vs. the Bishops topic. I have to eat my words, because I said no Catholic clergyman other than Fr. Martin would show after Stephen’s Time 100 Cardinal Dolan Viagra jokes, but there was Fr. Reese. He did a good job explaining social activism in the Catholic Church. Republican Catholic politicians get into trouble when it comes to their opposition for funding social programs for the poor, much like Dem Catholic politicians get into trouble if they are pro-choice (or not an actively promoting pro-life policies.) I think in the case of Ryan, the Bishops totally slammed him on his Ayn Rand admiration, so kudos to them.

Well Fr. Reese used to be Fr. Martin’s boss at America magazine, and Fr. Martin went with him to the taping so I think he had something to do with it! ;)

Well that probably has something to do with it. It’s not too often that you see priests being interviewed, outside of EWTN.

Kris, Karenatasha, Mr. Arkadin..assemble! Stephen mentioned The X-Files, so we can talk about it now whilst staying on topic. :P

@colbaby I’m an X-Files fan, too! As soon as Stephen started that line, I was like “Wait, isn’t that from …?” Love that either Stephen and/or the writers are X-Files fans.

I am also happy that Father Reese came on the show so soon after Stephen went after Cardinal Dolan at the Time 100 gala. Father Reese was very good. Shows that at least some Catholic leaders get it!

I know! Isn’t it great! Unfortunately, now that we can say anything we want about the X-Files…I can’t think of anything to say! :( Someone should look into why that is. Maybe an intrepid team of mismatched FBI agents with an irresistible combination brains and sex appeal? Nah.

Ha! I loved that he mentioned the show. I’d love it even more if he or one of his writers had read our exchange, but… probably not!

But I got a kick out of it all the same.

And I say that intrepid team should look into it! Right now. I’m sure David Duchovny/Mulder is smiling wryly as is his wont. And Scully-who is, you might remember, Catholic-would have appreciated the Jesuit priest.

I enjoyed the Father Reese appearance and his comments on the Paul Ryan budget very much also. I agree with CN Helper that it explained the Bishops’ position on the necessity of assisting the poor well. I thought the whole aspect of Stephen comparing Ryan’s following of Ayn Rand to Bigfoot was also quite clever. Stephen of course played along great with the segment.

The Carne Ross segment was also interesting, I was surprised they didn’t make more of a point about the fact that there was a major May Day Occupy protest going on all day in New York (and I believe elsewhere) probably as they spoke.

It’s possible they could do it today. Sometimes, if something is happening on that very day, they’ll wait to deal with it. They may have wanted the May Day protest to have fully finished before reporting it.

I agree with you. I wasn’t surprised by Jon not mentioning it. He seems not to think too much of the OWS movement. But I thought “Stephen” would have something to say about how “awful” it was. How the May Day protest was a Kenyan, fascist, socialist, lesbian, conspiracy invented by Eugene V. Debs in the 19th century (with his time machine and Linda Hamilton!) to keep Obama in power in the 21st century.

@llama: It wasn’t just conservatives who loved of the Obama-Gitmo joke. :) I like when TCR challenges it’s audiences like that.

I love that first screencap! This was quite a well-rounded show. I loved the first two segments. Not that I didn’t like the interview, but they could have skipped it entirely and just kept talking about Ryan and religion; it was that enjoyable.

I feel like the only reason one would admire Ayn Rand’s principles is so that they would have an excuse to be completely self-serving and not have to explain themselves. We are social creatures by nature. Who need and rely on each other at every stage of our lives. No one made it anywhere on this planet completely on their own. It makes no sense to me to think that we shouldn’t help and be kind to one another. Jesus really had the right idea. I’ll get off my soapbox now and say that I love that they consistently have discussions like the one last night on TCR. I love that it has become a regular thing.

Lastly, the best thing about the Carne Ross interview was easily Stephen’s ad-lib at the end:
Stephen: “We tried banks that reached out to the poor, they’re called sub-prime loans. And they didn’t work out.”
Ross: “That was more about exploiting the poor.”
    Stephen: “Potato, potahto.” Brilliant.

Yes, it was interesting how the X-Files writers delved deeper into Scully’s Catholicism as the show went on. Remember the episode with the boy who has the stigmata (Scully believes and Mulder doesn’t)?

I also miss the “edit” button.
