The Mystery of the Ever-Changing Glasses!

Over a year ago, The Colbert Nation was in the midst of one of the greatest mysteries of our time…the ominous appearance, disappearance and re-appearance of Stephen Colbert’s Band Aids. What did it all mean? The mystery remains unsolved, yet there has been no further sightings of any band aids. I guess this means we can move on. Nothing more to see here…

…or is there?

It was November 7th, 2013. Stephen was delivering his usual dosage of truthiness to his loyal followers. Everything appeared to be status quo. All was well.

Then … this … happened!!

Later that evening, Stephen appeared at The New York Comedy Festival sporting THESE!! Spotted! New glasses!! What is this? Our dear leader was donning a new pair of hip, dark-framed glasses! A new look, perhaps?

This requires further investigation …

November 11, 2013

Stephen returns from his weekend off, back to his former glasses (Kazuo Kawasaki). Okay. These new glasses. Maybe it was just a form experimentation. Moving on…

November 18, 2013

What?? They’re back! Is Stephen determined to change his glasses every week?

November 18, 2013 … one minute later …

Or within the same evening?

Confusion has now set in and The Colbert Nation is beginning to wonder … what does it all mean? Is it a sign?

November 24, 2013

Ah! Stephen and Jimmy Fallon together! Now, he is sporting the dark frames! Wearing these glasses can only mean one thing! Stephen is saying, “I am young! I am hip! Look at me now!” Ok, so it’s the dark frames…Got it! Loud and clear!

Um … okay. Young and hip now looks like someone from a Charles Dickens story! Okay, I got it! He is going retro! Which means he needs to wear the OLD glasses to fit the retro look! Okay, it’s all coming together now …

January 8, 2014

Yep! You see! I was correct! He is going with the retro! The rimless are in! The darker frames our out!

WHAT?? Hold the phone (or the glasses)! But he had been wearing the rimless for over a month! Or has he? Maybe it’s all an illusion!!

They’re gone! Alert the authorities! Stephen is not wearing any glasses at all! They’re missing. They’re stolen…

January 31, 2014 … even later that same evening …

… they’re in his hand. Phew! Okay, crisis averted. They are here! It’s the dark frames! Understood….

February 2, 2014

Okay. Really? Is this necessary? The glasses really need to change again?

February 2, 2014 … moments later …

Ok, now not only are the glasses changing, but so is Stephen’s entire facial structure!

February 10, 2014

Alright! His face is back! The mutant pistachio-head is gone! Thumbs up! And so are the dark frames…Maybe the pistachio swallowed the rimless frames!!

Yes! Stephen in a tuxedo with the darker frames! Okay, this must be it! The tuxedo solidifies his classiness and since he’s wearing the darker frames, this must prove that these are the glasses to stay! Stephen Colbert is classy with dark frames!

February 12, 2014

Grr! Darker frames on top! Rimless frames on the bottom! I can’t take this pressure!!

February 18, 2014

Sigh. I don’t even know what to say anymore (cute photo, btw…ok, I can say that…)

March 8, 2014

I see. I see. Rimless are back. Alright, I’m noticing a trend here. Maybe this is it. Maybe … this … is … really … it …

April 22, 2014

… okay, clearly I’ve been fooled again…Yes, that noise you hear is me laughing. That’s not crying! Sure, I’m confused beyond belief, but that doesn’t mean I’m crying! Stop it, these are not tears! And no I don’t want that tissue! I’m fine … sniff …

May 7, 2014

Dark frames. Great! I’ve seen this before! Not being fooled this time…

May 8, 2014

Um … okay … dark frames are back! I guess I can gently celebrate!

…I could seriously use someone to talk to right now…I’m so confused! Please…pretty please…

September 23, 2014

Okay! I’m done! I just spent the past ten months investigating this serious matter and I’m ready to reveal my findings. Ready?

Stephen Colbert has two pairs of glasses with two different representations! The older rimless ones represent him as his character on the show (yes, it is a character) and the dark framed glasses represents Stephen as himself, the actual person.

You see, I got it! Yes, it was a long, harrowing journey! But I found the light at the end of the tunnel. And that light was shining down on those two pairs of glasses! Yes. I. DID. IT.

Wait, what do you mean, “Well, he wasn’t in character when he appeared with Seth Meyers on September 3rd or when he was at the Hole in the Wall Camp on September 13th. Explain that!”

Okay, first of all, you really don’t have to take that tone with me. And second … okay, okay! Point taken! Well, my theory almost worked, up until recently. Don’t I get credit for that?

Well Colbert Nation! You be the judge! Are the glasses just acting as a representation of who he is at that moment — his character versus himself? Or is it something deeper? As of this reporting, Stephen continues to sport the rimless frames. But as history has proven, this can easily change, for the “Mystery of the Ever-Changing Glasses” remains UNSOLVED!!!!
