“The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” Scouting Locations in Charlotte for the DNC.
Forget about spotting POTUS or the Clintons in Charlotte in September at the Democratic National Convention. The real question is where to find the Comedy Central political satire tag team of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
Colbert and his Super PAC remain uncommitted, but Stewart, host of The Daily Show, is considering setting up shop at the 440-seat Booth Playhouse in Founders Hall during the convention.
“They made a site visit, but they’ve also been looking elsewhere,” says Tom Gabbard, president and chief executive at Blumenthal Performing Arts, the operator of the Booth, the Knight Theater and the N.C. Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.
Stewart’s staff likes the Booth both for its proximity to Time Warner Cable Arena and because the audience seating can be elevated to stage level, a set-up Stewart favors, Gabbard says.
This week, the Charlotte Public Library confirmed interest from an unnamed group to rent out the ImaginOn children’s library for 12 days, including the convention. ImaginOn includes two theaters and could be used for The Daily Show and Colbert’s program, The Colbert Report. Gabbard says The Daily Show is interested in ImaginOn as well as the Booth.
A Comedy Central spokeswoman could not be reached for immediate comment this afternoon.
