For months the Colbert Nation has speculated about Stephen Colberts possible involvement in ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy, after Stephen received an invitation from Peter Jackson to visit the films set in New Zealand.
As the promotional campaign for trilogies second installment, ‘The Desolation of Smaug’ kicks into high gear, IMDB has updated the films listing to included Stephen Colbert, Evelyn McGee, Peter Colbert and John Colbert as ‘Laketown Spies’.
Having not seen the film, I can neither confirm nor deny the casting news, the film isn’t released in Australia until Boxing Day. But for those of you planning on seeing the film in the cinema, keep your eyes peeled during the scenes in Laketown.
Reddit user Boobarella, has this to say about the scene:
“I saw a cut of the film. He’s sitting on a dock in Lake town smoking a pipe if I remember correctly. He’s looking off camera but featured and wearing a mangled wig of long hair. I remember thinking, “they made that guy look like a dirty Colbert.” Turns out…”
Warner Bros. tells Yahoo Movies, that the Colberts all play “Laketown spies” in the film. The location becomes central to the story about two-thirds of the way through the flick as it is the final destination before the dwarves and Bilbo Baggins head into the Lonely Mountain to displace that evil, treasure-hording dragon Smaug. In the town, which floats on an icy lake, the little folk strike a shaky alliance with Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans) and have to hang out there for a bit.
Our favourite Middle Earth fan boy participated in ‘The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug Live Event’, sending in a video asking Peter Jackson a complex question about portraying the differentiation of Elves in ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’. And Peter has a question for Stephen …

Yes, as we all know by now, it is HOBBIT week on the Report! The first film of the trilogy, An Unexpected Journey, officially premieres December 14th, in IMAX and HD, so fans will truly be able to feel as if they’re entering Middle Earth. (The next two, The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again, will screen in 2013 and 2014, respectively.) Stephen must feel as if his self-described “joy machine” has just kicked into overdrive. Does anyone remember Woody Allen’s Sleepers and the Orgasmatron? I think this will be the emotional equivalent of that physical experience for Mr. Colbert. I expect we’re going to see a blissfully happy host on the next four shows.
Here are two articles trumpeting what’s about to happen this week:
Because you know who most of these guests are, I’ve gone light on the bios and a little heavier on the links. And let’s enjoy these precious episodes as we count down to the holiday break.
And by the way–David Hallberg tweeted a picture of “fellow tights-wearing friend” Stephen at the Kennedy Center gala, where Hallberg was honoring ballerina Natalia Makarova and Stephen was toasting David Letterman.
Well, EW has put the rumor swirling around a potential Colbert cameo directly to Hobbit director Peter Jackson—and Jackson isn’t denying it! Then again, he isn’t confirming it. “I read that, too—it was very, very interesting,” Jackson says, laughing. “It’s yet to be confirmed or denied.” Jackson will, however, confirm one thing: Colbert is a serious Tolkien fanatic: “I have never met a bigger Tolkien geek in my life,” Jackson says. “Philippa Boyens is our resident Tolkien expert, and when Stephen came down to visit the set, we put him head to head with Philippa on a Tolkien quiz—and Stephen triumphed. I have to say, his encyclopedic knowledge of Tolkien is spectacular, and points to a deprived childhood in some respects.”
