Welcome to “A Look Back,” where we review and celebrate select items from the many splendid works of Stephen T. Colbert over the years.
Check out this good find: a 2006 event with Stephen and San Francisco Chronicle TV Critic Tim Goodman. According to sfgate.com, the event was put on by the “City Arts and Lectures” program of San Francisco. The extensive interview covers Stephen’s life and career in great detail, and is fantastic if you just want to hear Stephen talk at length, or are new to the fandom and need to learn more about the man himself. It is quite delightful, and a great glimpse of Stephen in those heady, early days of the Report. Click on the lengths to follow the four-part podcast of the event:

Yes! If anyone hasn’t heard this, definitely give it a listen-to; it will make your ears happy. Very good interview from a Stephen that wasn’t off-the-wall famous yet. I especially love the bits about his college years. I’m not a fan at all of the audience questions, but thankfully I found out how to cut and edit things on iTunes, so I was able to cut that last bit out. This is one of those interviews that I gladly listen to occasionally on the way to work or on a long car ride

This is great. Haven’t heard this one yet. There was a lot of stuff I already knew, but yet there was so much more too. I didn’t know that about his college years and having all that anger and his teacher telling him to get therapy. Also, I thought that story about how his diploma had a note from the dean that said “see me” was just a joke, but I guess not. Someone said he was joking when he told that story in his speech at the commencement a few years back, but that seemed like a genuine story in this interview. I have only heard the first two parts, I’m going to save the last two for later. Thanks for posting.

Finally got to listen to this and I found it incredibly fascinating. The tone felt very different from recent interviews, and I can’t put my finger on exactly why, when so much of the material is familiar. And of course, the audience seemed far less knowledgeable about him back then than they are now. But all I can say is: that poor guy who asked him that question about the “straight white guy.” I would not have wanted to be in his shoes.
Thanks for posting this!
