Site Update: Technical Difficulties and Staff Openings

Colbert News Hub Updates G’day Hubsters!

You may have noticed that our post frequency has been has been down of late, and I do sincerely apologise for that. There are a few main reasons for this. Firstly, for the past five weeks I have been away studying in Greece, with a brief stop off in Paris and London – all of which are truly amazing places that I cannot wait to go back and visit. Due to my studies I have been unable to spend as much time working on the site as I have wanted to, nor have I been able to keep up with the awesome six degrees activities that have been going on, but I will be doing a catch up ‘Six Degrees’ post in the near future. Thankfully, our awesome Hub Staffers have all stepped up to help me out and keep things running smoothly while I have been gone. Did I mention that our Hub Staffers rock!?!

Unfortunately, in the past months we have lost a number of Hub Staffers who have had to step down from their positions to focus on real life commitments. A big thank you goes out to Justine, Kris and Karenatasha for all of your wonderful help and dedication. We have been lucky enough to have StephenSmile64, Mrc and Elanor Gamgee join our team – all of whom have been doing a fantastic job. But we are still in need of a few more people to help us out here at the site. If you would like to help at the site, whether it be full-time, part-time or some times, please take a look at our jobs page. We don’t mind if you work alone, or with a partner, as long as the task at hand gets done. Don’t worry if you don’t have any blogging experience, we are here to help you learn the ropes and to teach you some new and exciting skills!!

If you are interested in applying for a position or would like to know more, please email me at: [email protected]

Onto the last item of today’s agenda – the site theme. As much as I have liked working with our old theme, the time has come to say goodbye. Cate and I have put in a lot of hard work getting our current theme looking right, but the truth of the matter is, the theme is no longer being updated by its designer and in turn is wrecking havoc with our site. Each time WordPress releases a new update, so do the plugins we use, but eventually they will no longer work or be compatible with our site if it is too out of date, which the current theme is. This is also one of the reasons why some of you have yourselves been experiencing issues when commenting or viewing various aspects of the site.

I am doing my best to find a new theme for the site and to get things back up and running smoothly again, but I am not the expert in this area that I would like to be. Hopefully, the transition to a new theme will only turn a few of my hairs grey, but it would ever so wonderful if I had someone experienced in this area to help me out … just in case I blow something up.

If you, someone you know or someone you have worked with has experience with web development, design and general technical aspects of working and running a website, please shoot me an email to: [email protected].

Hopefully, working together we can get this site back on track!!

If you have any issues, concerns, critiques or suggestions for the site, please feel free to leave them in the comments or send me an email. If there is anything else you would like to address regarding the site that I have failed to mention above, again feel free to leave a comment or shoot me an email!! I look forward to hearing thoughts, concerns and ideas!!

Oh, and of course. No post would be complete without a little eye candy. Enjoy!!

  1. Hi everyone! I had to got out-of-pocket for a few days, but it is nice to be back from a brief trip. Katt, I love this – is this a gif? Paul Dinello is right, no one quite peers from behind things like Stephen, it never fails to be funny.

Hubsters, don’t be shy about letting us know your thoughts about the site. We are experimenting with changes that we hope will make the “hubbing” experience more enjoyable for you and for the Hub staff as well, purveyors that we are of all things Stephen. Fairly shortly with the new theme the comment edit issues will go away, and the gobbelty-gook error messages too.

As far as site help goes, it takes a village to venerate a Stephen. So, even if you can just do a post a month, it will make our already awesome site even awesomer, and allow you to express yourself about a myriad of topics in a way you never thought possible. Believe you me. Or if you are a web designer and don’t mind to lend your talents pro bono for the Spirit of the Cause, if you would be willing to donate some help, your good deed will not be unrecognized.

I am really excited about the Hub developments this year. I miss our retired contributors, and we can never thank anyone enough who has donated their time to this forum, but am very impressed by the dedication of our current small group. They are really fun to work with, and very supportive as well.

    Happy Hubbing!!

Tip of the Hat! Thumb up +2

  2. @CN Helper

Glad to see you back, CN. You were missed.

Since Lady Helper asked…I’m not sure how to say this or what the technical term is. But, I’d like if you’d bring back the ability to reply to specific peoples posting. For example, you used to be able to press the “Reply” at the bottom of a particular persons post and your question or comment for that person would appear directly under their post. This would then allow any and all questions or comments for that specific person’s post to cluster together and separate from people who wanted to just post about whatever they wanted to say about the show or topic at hand. To me this ability made the comments flow better and it sectioned off those in “conversations” from people who weren’t necessarily interested in those “conversations.”

I know I’m not expressing this very clearly. But that’s the best I can do.

  3. @Mr. Arkadin

Yes Mr. Arkadin, I know exactly what you mean. Hopefully with the new theme, that will be one of the issues that will be fixed. If not I will see if I can find another solution!

Tip of the Hat! Thumb up +1

  4. @Mr. Arkadin Hi, Mr. A, thanks! No, I get what you are saying. The “reply” feature was affected by the theme we use not updating. WordPress went ahead and updated, and so did we, but the template we use has not, so things like the reply feature went a little wonky. That is why with the new theme you can edit, reply, just like before. It will take some time and a few tries of theme to get it right, but eventually reply commenting will be improved. But thanks for your feedback and feel free to let us know your thoughts any time. You can always email me on the site as well. :)

And that's the Word!
